MORE FROM BAER ART CENTER, ICELAND

One month spent on Artist Residency at Baer Art Center this year was an amazing experience to say the least. A few more images from my time there, the landscape and explorative work from the studio. The biggest thank you to Director Steinunn Jonsdottir and all at Baer for creating such a wonderful and welcoming space and to fellow artists, Lisa Ochowycz, Lisa Stybor, Katharina Rossboth and Jessica Auer.

ARTIST RESIDENCY ICELAND

It is now Day 12 of my one month residency at Baer Art Center in Hofsos, Iceland. In the June group are 5 artists. Two painters, two photographers and one ceramic artist. It was very exciting and overwhelming (in a great way!) to arrive at Baer with the group. Baer is located on land to the north of the small town Hofsos (population approx. 200) in North Iceland. It is located on the coast of the Skagafjordor (fjord) and is a horse farm. Baer's land is vast and exploration has revealed so much interesting diversity - beaches, (rocky and black sand), the cape and surrounding peninsula, the island Drangey in the distance, wetlands, bird life, lake, wildflowers, horses, mountains. It is incredibly beautiful, vast, majestic and quiet. We are also experiencing the midnight sun. Days are long, there is actually no real darkness, with the sun setting progressively later (almost at 1AM now) and rising an hour later. It is an amazing opportunity to be outside especially at these times, exploring the landscape and observing the changes in light, air and sky.

In the studio I am working on extending the forms in my work and looking at how forms and parts of forms can transition, and the contrast of strong/robust to delicate. I am using objects I find in the landscape here (such as dried kelp, other types of seaweed, bones, rocks, etc) as a springboard and also the landscape (and forces within the landscape) itself. This is a great time for exploring these ideas, writing and drawing. I am excited to see what will come...

Below are a few images of my time at Baer Art Center to date. If this project is of interest to you I am posting regularly on my Instagram account.
